EVE™ is a benchtop counter and uses state-of-the-art optics and image analysis to automate cell counting, designed to measure cell count and viability (live, dead, and total cells) accurately and precisely, using the standard trypan blue technique. EVE™ offers an intuitive user interface, and provides the option to save and print cell count data using an USB drive.

A single, sample measurement in less than 30 seconds produces the following results:

  • Live and dead cell concentration/mL
  • Total cell concentration/mL
  • Viability (% live cells to total cells)
  • Mean diameter
  • Cell images
  • Graphical data representation

Trypan blue staining

Trypan blue is a vital diazo dye stain used to selectively colour dead tissues or cells blue. Live cells or tissues with intact cell membranes are not coloured. Since cells are very selective in the compounds that pass through the membrane, in a viable cell trypan blue is not absorbed; however, it traverses the membrane in a dead cell.

Hence, dead cells are shown as a distinctive blue colour under a microscope. Since live cells are excluded from staining, this staining method is also described as a dye exclusion method.

EVE™ is supplied with disposable cell counting chamber slides that contain two enclosed chambers to hold the sample to allow you to measure two different samples or perform replicates of the same sample. The cell counting occurs in the central location of the counting chamber and the volume counted is 0.4µL, the same as counting four (1 mm x 1 mm) squares in a standard hemocytometer
